SPB-SGA-SAAC concert on the Green
spill tab opened for JAWNY at the College’s concert and game day event, Colby Calling on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 2:30 p.m. on the Colby Green.
The Colby Echo was fortunate to speak over direct messages with JAWNY, which is the official stage name of Jacob Lee-Nicholas Sullenger, an indie-pop singer-songwriter.
“My perspective is that Colby is awesome. Maine is beautiful. Everybody is nice here! And I had a great time coming out to the college with spill tab to play some music for whoever decided to show up,” JAWNY said.
The concert was lightly attended, but it made the event more unique and personal.
Rhea Bakshi `25 attended the concert and said the sparse audience had fun energy.
“Despite the small-sized crowd, the energy was strong and we were able to meet some of the band members. I hope Colby invites more artists like JAWNY. It’s so cool to learn about and listen to new artists, especially on campus with all your friends,” Bakshi said.
Bakshi explained that the crowd mostly only sang along to the two most famous songs.
“We were lucky enough to hear the classic TikTok-famous songs like ‘Honeypie’ and ‘Trigger of Love,’ a cover of a Killers song, and a new unreleased song,” Bakshi said.
While the most well-known song was “Honeypie,” the lineup showed a great variety of songs, enlivened by a loop of recorded demos to back up the performance with strings to make it sound like a fuller ensemble. This is part of JAWNY’s style, making live music more fun.
“My favorite song to do live is ‘Take it Back’ because I liked watching everyone jump around and have a good time,” JAWNY added.
Right before this song began, the bass player swapped instruments with the bass player from spill tab after a string broke, leading to one of several call and response chants during the show.
The best part of JAWNY’s northeast tour so far was “playing a sold out show in Boston and them being the loudest crowd we have ever had, and then getting to drive down to [Colby to] play a show.”
Bakshi reflected on the performance that took place right before the highly-attended football game against Bowdoin.
“The concert was a lot of fun! Both spill tab and JAWNY hyped the crowd up with funny jokes and good music,” she said.
spill tab finished a month-long tour with this weekend’s show at Colby.
“I had a lot of fun performing ‘Calvaire.’ There was a student that said she was a huge fan of the song, so that was really cute,” spill tab said.
Artists and audience members both seemed to enjoy connecting throughout the event.
According to Bakshi, the artists approached students after the concert to chat about the performance and their musical interests.
Thanks to the Student Programming Board, Student Government Association, and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, dedicated fans of live music were able to see an engaging show right on campus.
